These improvised art quilts combine the vivid colors of my hand-dyed fabrics with a whimsical view of the world. Fanciful landscapes bloom, giant paintbrushes sweep into action, and memories of childhood flourish as I create each fused art quilt. The warmth of cloth, the colors of fabric, and the rhythm of the sewing machine entice me to create joyful work and play at the same time.

As a hand dyer, my job is to take plain, white fabric and turn it into a piece of artwork. I make art fabric. Artfabrik (also the name of my hand-dyeing business) expresses my love of color and the joy of working with colorful fabrics and threads.

My father’s farm in Minnesota remains one of my favorite childhood memories. It came complete with a chicken coop, a rickety barn, rusty well water, and an apple orchard. The orchard was a special point of pride with the family. We sold Winesap, Jonathan, and a version of apples my father claimed to be called by the romantic name of “Prairie Spy”.

Five Sisters

It’s summer on the family farm and I smell the fresh-cut hay, tilled earth, and ripe plums in the orchard. My four sisters and I walk across the land, laughing together and feeling the sun on our backs.
